The Department of Surgery is committed to delivering the highest quality whole person care, educating the next generation of surgical leaders, and advancing sustainable surgical research and innovation. We strive to lead the way in surgical equity and increase access to safe surgical care everywhere we serve. We promote these ideals through our Center for Global Surgery, which supports communities locally and worldwide.

Guided by the values of Loma Linda University Health, our Loma Linda University Surgery Commitment is to incorporate integrity, excellence, teamwork, compassion, humility, wholeness, and justice in our patient care, education, and research missions.

Our Approach

Our approach begins with engaging patients, staff, trainees, and faculty with compassion, seeking to understand and meet their unique needs. Vital to this approach is creating a diverse, equitable environment that fosters not only inclusion, but appreciation and support. We believe experiencing unique perspectives benefits our team in invaluable ways and enriches our collective understanding of our community and its needs.

With a focus on wholeness, we’re able to prioritize our duty to our patients and our collective mission above individual pursuits. We actively develop an environment of shared responsibility and partnership in care to bridge gaps between specialties and even disciplines. The result is trust, honest communication, transparency, and accountability, all ultimately benefiting both our teams and those we serve.

Finally, to ensure our actions meet our standards, we appoint directors to champion each of our organization’s core values. Each director collaborates with surgical specialty chiefs and the department chair, building a culture of shared commitments and goals. This unified culture informs daily patient care and serves as a foundation on which to build the future of surgical services at Loma Linda University Health.
